Custom Walk-In Closets vs IKEA: An Honest Comparison for Homeowners

IKEA PAX is a legitimate closet system — it’s not a toy, it’s well-engineered, and for the right situation it’s the correct choice. The question isn’t “is IKEA bad?” The question is: which situation are you in?

This is a straight comparison — not a pitch for the most expensive option. For some closet situations, IKEA PAX is the right answer. For most primary bedroom closets in Vaughan and GTA North homes with non-standard dimensions or specific wardrobe requirements, custom wins decisively. Here’s where the line is.

Where IKEA PAX Actually Makes Sense

IKEA PAX makes genuine sense in these situations — and recommending custom in these cases would be bad advice:

  • PAX is the right call
  • Standard alcove dimensions: If your closet space happens to be exactly 93.5 inches wide (a common size in some 1990s GTA homes), PAX units tile perfectly with no gaps. This is rare, but it happens
  • Basement or utility storage: Non-bedroom storage where aesthetics don’t matter and function is the only priority

Where Custom Beats IKEA Every Time

Non-standard closet dimensions (almost everywhere in Vaughan)

IKEA PAX frames come in three widths: 19″, 23.5″, and 35.5″. A closet that is 96″ wide requires a combination of frames that totals 94.5″ or 96″ exactly, or you’re left with a gap. In most GTA North homes built between 1985–2015, closet dimensions don’t map cleanly to IKEA’s module widths. The result is either a visible gap at the wall or a filler piece that makes the installation look like an afterthought.

A custom closet is designed to your closet’s exact dimensions — measured in your home after wallpaper is removed and baseboard trim heights are accounted for. Every shelf runs wall to wall. The only thing visible is the closet itself.

Ceiling height mismatch

IKEA PAX comes in two heights: 79″ and 93″. In a closet with 8-foot (96″) ceilings, the 93″ frame leaves 3 inches of dead space above the cabinet. In a 9-foot ceiling closet — increasingly common in Vaughan new construction — PAX frames leave 15 inches of dead space at the top. A custom closet extends to the exact ceiling height, adding an entire shelf row of storage that PAX simply cannot reach.

Complex layouts and island configurations

IKEA PAX cannot accommodate a centre island, a seating bench, a built-in mirror at a specific height, or an L-shaped configuration that turns a corner. Custom cabinetry can do all of these — and integrates them into a single, cohesive design from one material and finish.

The 10-Year Math on a Primary Bedroom Closet

For a primary bedroom closet in a GTA North home where you plan to stay 10+ years, custom closets typically cost less over the full ownership horizon — particularly when resale value impact is considered. A well-designed, properly installed custom primary closet is a selling feature in Vaughan and GTA North. An IKEA PAX installation is visible as such and is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IKEA PAX worth it for a walk-in closet?

For secondary bedrooms, guest rooms, rentals, and short-term situations: yes. For a primary bedroom with non-standard dimensions, ceiling above 93″, or complex layout requirements: no — the fit issues and 10–15 year lifespan make custom the better long-term investment.

Does IKEA PAX fit most GTA closets?

Rarely without visible gaps. PAX comes in only three widths and two heights. Most Vaughan and GTA North closets don’t match these module dimensions precisely — resulting in filler strips, dead ceiling space, or corner gaps that a custom closet eliminates entirely.
