Bathroom Vanity Storage Ideas That Actually Work

Bathroom storage is a chronic problem in GTA North homes. The master ensuite doubles as a grooming room, medicine cabinet, linen closet, and laundry staging area — and most vanities are designed to hold maybe a third of what actually needs to live in the bathroom. Here are the storage ideas that consistently solve this problem in custom bathroom cabinetry builds across Vaughan and GTA North.

1. The Dedicated Drawer Tower (Most Impactful Single Addition)

If there’s one storage element that most dramatically improves bathroom vanity function, it’s a dedicated drawer tower beside each sink. Three to four deep drawers stacked vertically — sized for toiletries (wide, shallow top drawer), hair tools (deep middle drawer), and larger items (deep bottom drawer) — replace the chaotic under-sink cabinet shuffle with organized, instantly accessible storage. In a double vanity, one tower per person eliminates the sharing conflict entirely.

DKC builds drawer towers in standard configurations but also custom-sized to specific item dimensions on request — a blow-dryer drawer at the exact depth and width of the specific dryer, a hair tool charging drawer with an in-drawer power outlet, or an extra-wide makeup drawer with removable divider inserts.

2. Under-Sink Cabinet Optimization

The under-sink cabinet is the worst-utilized storage space in most bathrooms because the P-trap creates an obstacle that forces most items to be stored around it rather than in front of it. In a custom build, DKC works around the P-trap to maximize the usable interior by designing the cabinet opening and interior shelf specifically around the plumbing location. Options include: a narrow pull-out tray on one side of the trap that stores cleaning products vertically; a half-shelf above the trap zone that extends the full cabinet width; and a removable lower shelf that provides access to plumbing without disassembling stored items.

3. The Full-Height Linen Tower

A linen tower at one or both ends of the vanity run is the most comprehensive linen storage solution available without a dedicated linen closet. Standard configuration: open adjustable shelving in the upper half for towels, folded linens, and toiletry backstock; a hamper section or large drawer at the bottom for laundry staging. A 16″-wide linen tower holds a substantial quantity of towels and linens and reads as part of the vanity system rather than a separate piece of furniture.

4. Medicine Cabinet or Mirror Cabinet (Hidden Everyday Storage)

A recessed or surface-mounted medicine cabinet behind the vanity mirror provides 4–6″ of hidden storage depth behind the mirror surface. Typically holds prescriptions, contact lens supplies, first aid items, and daily-use toiletries that would otherwise crowd the countertop. The modern medicine cabinet has shallow adjustable shelves (3–4 inches deep) behind one or two mirror panels — push on the mirror to open.

DKC builds recessed medicine cabinets into the wall cavity between studs (requires a 3.5″ stud bay — standard 2×4 wall) or as a surface-mounted unit when wall depth isn’t available. Either option stores 30–40 small bathroom items completely out of sight.

5. Vertical Dividers in Upper Drawers

A wide top drawer without dividers turns into a loose-item chaos drawer within weeks. DKC installs removable divider inserts in the top drawer of each tower — thin wood strips that create defined compartments for makeup, toothbrush holders, brushes, and grooming tools. Available as fixed plywood dividers (built into the drawer box) or as removable bamboo/acrylic insert trays that can be reconfigured. The organized top drawer is the one storage element that guests notice immediately when they open the vanity.

6. Pull-Out Tray Under the Sink

A full-width pull-out tray that slides out from the under-sink cabinet on full-extension drawer slides. The tray sits below the P-trap level and slides forward to provide full access to the items stored behind it. Far more functional than a fixed-shelf under-sink cabinet where items at the back are inaccessible without removing everything in front. Particularly useful for cleaning product storage where access is needed but items are not used daily.

7. Electrical in the Vanity

An electrical outlet installed inside the top drawer of the vanity tower powers hair tools — blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron — stored in the drawer, charged and ready without counter occupation. The tool is stored in the drawer between uses; the cord stays inside the drawer; the outlet is inside the drawer and not visible from outside the vanity. Requires an electrician to install an in-drawer outlet during the renovation, coordinated before the vanity is installed.

8. Niche Shelving in the Shower Wall

While not strictly vanity cabinetry, a custom built-in shower niche — a recessed shelf in the shower wall for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash — is one of the most practical storage additions DKC can include in an ensuite renovation. A tiled niche replaces a wire corner caddy and reads as a permanent architectural feature of the shower. Standard dimensions: 12″ wide x 24″ tall x 3.5″ deep (single stud bay) or 12″ wide x 12″ tall (single niche).
