A built-in entertainment center transforms the primary focal wall of a living room from a collection of freestanding furniture into a single, cohesive architectural feature. It’s one of the most impactful single-room upgrades in the GTA North housing market — and one of the most misdesigned when homeowners don’t think through the full scope before the cabinets are built. Here’s how to design one that works long-term.
Step 1: Define the TV Wall Layout
The first decision is which of three primary layouts the wall dictates:
- Full-wall (symmetrical): TV is centered on the wall with equal cabinet and shelf runs on both sides. The TV is either floating on an open panel (for a clean look) or recessed into a cabinet opening (for a framed look). Most common for living rooms with a primary focus on the TV wall and no fireplace.
- Fireplace surround: The TV mounts above the fireplace or to one side, with built-in cabinetry flanking both sides of the fireplace opening. This is the most common configuration in GTA North detached homes with a gas fireplace insert in the main living room or family room.
- Offset TV panel: The TV wall is not the full width of the room. One or two built-in cabinet runs anchor the TV, with additional shelving or storage on adjacent walls. Common in smaller living rooms or open-concept great rooms where the TV wall is partially defined by the floor plan.
Step 2: Plan All the Components
- TV panel or opening: The TV mounting surface. For a floating look, this is a flat plywood panel with concealed wire channels. For a framed look, this is a defined cabinet opening sized to the TV dimensions with cable management below.
- Media cabinet / AV cabinet: The base cabinet below or beside the TV that houses the AV receiver, cable/streaming boxes, gaming consoles, and disc players. Must have ventilation panels or a ventilated back for heat management. Cable management from the TV mount into the AV cabinet below is a critical detail.
- Flanking display shelves: Open shelving on both sides of the TV panel for books, décor, and display items. Adjustable shelving standard — the height of displayed items changes over time.
- Closed cabinet base sections: Closed-door base cabinets flanking the AV zone for concealed storage (board games, DVDs, vinyl records, blankets). These visually anchor the installation and create a solid base for the floating shelf and TV sections above.
- Upper closed cabinets: Above the open shelving zone, closed upper cabinets hide storage that doesn’t need to be on display and bring the installation to ceiling height.
Step 3: Cable Management — Plan It Before Production
This is the single most common mistake in DIY and poorly designed entertainment centers: cable management is an afterthought rather than a designed feature. In a DKC entertainment center, cable management is designed before a single cabinet is built:
- A dedicated cable channel runs from the TV mounting position to the AV cabinet below, concealed inside the wall panel or inside a recessed channel in the cabinet back
- A power outlet is installed inside the AV cabinet (by the electrician before installation) so all AV equipment power cables run inside the cabinet — no visible cables exiting the cabinet front
- HDMI and other signal cables run through the channel from the AV cabinet to the TV mount position with a recessed wall plate at each end
- Sound bar cable channels run horizontally below the TV panel to speaker positions on each side if a full surround system is planned
Step 4: Choose Your Finish
| Finish Style | Material | Best Room Style |
|---|---|---|
| Painted (white, grey, charcoal) | MDF door fronts, plywood boxes | Contemporary, transitional |
| Natural wood (white oak, maple) | Veneer or solid wood fronts | Warm contemporary, Japandi |
| Two-tone (dark base, light upper) | Painted MDF, mixed finishes | Contemporary, transitional |
| Dark (navy, black, forest green) | Painted MDF, open shelving | Bold contemporary, moody |
