The material choices in a built-in entertainment unit affect how it looks, how long it lasts, how it handles heat from AV equipment, and what it costs. Entertainment unit construction has some specific requirements that differ from kitchen or closet cabinetry — particularly around heat management, the TV panel design, and the visual prominence of the piece in the primary living space of the home. Here’s what to know before you specify materials.
The Four Main Structural Materials
1. Furniture-Grade Plywood (Box Construction Standard)
Furniture-grade plywood — 3/4″ birch core — is the correct structural material for entertainment unit boxes. It holds screws reliably (important for mounting brackets, shelf pins, and heavy hardware), doesn’t sag on long shelf spans under book and audio equipment loads, and tolerates the occasional heat fluctuation from equipment in enclosed AV cabinets better than MDF, which swells when exposed to repeated thermal cycling. DKC uses furniture-grade plywood for all entertainment unit box construction.
2. MDF (Door Fronts and Painted Panels)
MDF is the right material for painted door fronts, drawer fronts, and TV panel faces in entertainment units — its smooth, consistent surface produces flawless painted results with no wood grain telegraphing through the finish. For entertainment units with a painted finish (white, grey, charcoal, navy, black), MDF door fronts on plywood boxes is the standard construction used by professional cabinet makers in the GTA market. Avoid using MDF for the AV cabinet base or for shelves that carry heavy loads over long spans.
3. Natural Wood Veneer
Wood veneer — a thin slice of real wood (typically white oak, maple, or walnut) applied to a plywood or MDF substrate — is the standard material for natural-finish entertainment units. It provides the visual character of solid wood at a lower cost and with better dimensional stability than solid wood panels on large surfaces. Veneer plywood panels are the standard for entertainment unit side panels, TV panel faces, and open shelf faces in natural wood finish builds. White oak veneer in a wire-brushed or natural satin finish is the dominant entertainment unit material request in GTA North in 2026.
4. Solid Wood (Accents and Feature Elements)
Solid wood is used strategically in entertainment unit construction — not for large panels (which would move with seasonal humidity and create joint problems) but for specific elements where the material character is the design intent: solid wood face frames, door profiles with solid wood rails and stiles, floating shelf edges, and decorative column elements. Solid maple, white oak, and walnut are all used in this way in DKC entertainment unit builds.
Material Choices for Specific Entertainment Unit Components
| Component | Best Material | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet boxes (sides, top, bottom) | 3/4″ birch plywood | — |
| Door fronts (painted finish) | MDF | Painted maple |
| Door fronts (natural finish) | Solid wood or veneer | Veneer MDF |
| TV panel face | Veneer plywood or MDF (painted) | Shiplap solid wood |
| Open shelves | 3/4″ plywood with solid wood edge | Solid wood |
| AV cabinet (component storage) | Plywood (ventilated) | Do not use MDF in AV zone |
| Back panel (AV cabinet) | Louvred MDF or no back (ventilation) | Open back with cable management |
Special Consideration: AV Cabinet Heat Management
The AV component cabinet is the most technically demanding part of an entertainment unit to design correctly. AV receivers, amplifiers, and gaming consoles all generate significant heat during operation — and heat buildup inside a closed cabinet is the primary cause of equipment failure. The key design rules are: (1) the AV cabinet must have ventilation — either a louvred back panel, open back, or powered ventilation fan; (2) vertical clearance between equipment shelves must be adequate (typically 4–6″ minimum above each component); and (3) door fronts on the AV zone should be avoided for equipment in continuous use unless a powered ventilation system is installed.
DKC uses furniture-grade plywood boxes and appropriate materials for every component — including proper AV cabinet ventilation in every entertainment unit.
