The fireplace wall is the primary focal wall in most GTA North main-floor living rooms and family rooms. When flanked with built-in cabinetry, it transforms from a single fireplace insert surrounded by empty wall into a complete architectural feature that anchors the room. Here are the key design principles, layout options, and finish choices that determine whether a fireplace surround cabinet installation looks intentional or awkward.
Layout Options for Fireplace Surround Built-Ins
Symmetrical Flanking (Most Common)
Equal cabinet and shelf runs on both sides of the fireplace — the same width, the same height, mirrored configuration. This is the most proportionate and most widely built layout in GTA North living rooms. The fireplace opening is centered on the wall, and the built-in cabinetry units are designed to bring the installation to ceiling height on both sides. This layout works best when the fireplace is genuinely centered on the wall and there is at least 30″ of wall width available on each side of the fireplace opening.
Asymmetrical (One Wide + One Narrow Flanker)
When the fireplace is not centered on the wall — or when the homeowner wants a TV wall on one side of the fireplace only — asymmetrical flanking provides a contemporary, non-traditional look. One side gets a full-width TV and AV section; the other side gets a narrower display and storage run. This requires careful design to feel intentional rather than space-constrained.
Full-Width Surround (Fireplace Integrated into a Full-Wall Unit)
The fireplace opening is framed by built-in cabinetry that runs the full width of the wall — floor to ceiling, wall to wall. The fireplace becomes one element in a larger unified installation rather than the focal point flanked by separate units. This approach works best in larger rooms where a full-wall installation is proportionate and where the homeowner wants the maximum architectural impact.
TV Above the Fireplace: Yes or No?
One of the most debated design decisions in fireplace surround cabinetry is whether to mount the TV above the fireplace. The practical arguments against: a gas fireplace generates significant heat in the zone directly above the firebox, and most TV manufacturers void warranties when TVs are mounted within the heat zone. The ergonomic argument against: a TV mounted at fireplace surround height (typically 5–6 feet from the floor) puts the screen at neck-extension viewing height for seated viewers. DKC recommends either (a) a TV mounted on one side of the fireplace at standard mounting height in a dedicated TV section, or (b) a motorized TV lift that positions the TV above the fireplace only when in use and stores it below or to the side when not.
Cabinet Proportions That Work
The most common proportioning mistake in fireplace surround cabinetry is making the flanking units too narrow — a pair of 18″-wide flanking units on each side of a 48″ fireplace opening looks undersized. The general proportion rule: the combined width of both flanking units should be equal to or greater than the width of the fireplace opening. If the fireplace opening is 48″ wide, each flanking unit should be at least 24″ wide (48″ total flanking = 1:1 ratio). Units narrower than 18″ on each side almost always look underpowered.
