Custom wood kitchen cabinets are a significant investment. Properly cared for, they last 25–35 years and look better than budget alternatives after a decade. Improperly cleaned — especially with the wrong products — they can show wear in 5–8 years regardless of how much was spent on them. Here’s the complete guide to wooden cabinet maintenance from a manufacturer’s perspective.
Understanding Your Cabinet Finish
The correct cleaning method depends on the finish type. The three main finish types on Canadian custom cabinets:
- Catalyzed lacquer (most common on custom cabinetry): Hard, durable factory finish. Most custom cabinet manufacturers in Canada, including DKC, use catalyzed lacquer. Highly resistant to moisture and most household chemicals at full cure (typically 30 days after installation)
- Painted MDF (common on painted doors): Paint over MDF substrate. Durable but more susceptible to chipping at edges and corners than lacquer on solid wood or plywood
- Natural wood oil or wax (solid wood, oiled finish): Less common in kitchen applications; requires periodic re-oiling (annually) and is more sensitive to water exposure
Daily and Weekly Cleaning
What to Use
- Damp cloth (microfibre preferred): Wrung out so it’s damp, not wet. The best and safest daily cleaning tool for all cabinet finishes
- Mild dish soap solution: A few drops of mild dish soap in warm water. Apply with damp cloth; wipe dry immediately after. Safe for catalyzed lacquer and painted surfaces
- Murphy’s Oil Soap (diluted): A traditional wood cabinet cleaner that works on lacquered and oiled wood cabinets. Use diluted as directed. Not recommended for painted or high-gloss finishes where it can leave a streaky residue
What to Avoid
- All-purpose sprays with bleach or ammonia: Bleach and ammonia degrade lacquer finishes and can cause chalking or discoloration on painted surfaces
- Abrasive scrubbers: Steel wool, green scrub pads, and abrasive sponges scratch lacquered and painted surfaces — even “light” scratches catch light and accumulate
- Silicone-based furniture polishes (Pledge, etc.): These leave a silicone film that builds up over time, making future refinishing impossible and giving an increasingly artificial-looking shine
- Excessive water: Standing water on cabinet surfaces or near joints causes finish clouding and, in persistent exposure, wood swelling. Wipe up spills and splashes immediately
High-Risk Areas: Range and Dishwasher Zones
- Cabinets adjacent to the range: Grease and cooking vapour accumulate on surfaces within 18″ of the range. Clean these surfaces weekly with the mild soap solution, not just when visibly dirty. Grease that bakes onto a finish over months requires increasingly aggressive cleaning to remove
- Cabinets above the dishwasher: Steam from dishwasher cycles rises into the underside of the cabinet above. Run the dishwasher when you’ll be home to wipe down any visible condensation on the cabinet underside after the cycle finishes
- Cabinet faces around the sink: Water splashes and soap residue accumulate here. Wipe dry after use; don’t leave a wet cloth draped over a cabinet door handle
Seasonal and Annual Maintenance
- Hinge and hardware check (annually): Tighten any loose hinge screws; re-adjust concealed hinges if doors have shifted out of alignment. Concealed hinges have 3-axis adjustment screws — alignment can be corrected without tools for minor shifts
- Drawer slide lubrication (every 2–3 years): Metal drawer slides benefit from a light application of dry lubricant (PTFE or silicone spray — not WD-40, which attracts dust). Soft-close mechanisms rarely need lubrication if the cabinet is kept clean
- Interior cleaning (annually): Empty cabinets and wipe interiors with the mild soap solution. Check for any signs of moisture intrusion near plumbing cabinets (under-sink areas especially)
| Cleaning Task | Frequency | Product |
|---|---|---|
| General wipe-down | Daily or as needed | Damp microfibre cloth |
| Grease and food splatter | Weekly (range zone) | Mild dish soap + water, dry immediately |
| Hardware and hinges | Annually | Tighten screws; adjust hinges if needed |
| Interior cabinet cleaning | Annually | Damp cloth; check for moisture at plumbing |
