Small bedroom closets are the most common closet problem in GTA North homes. Whether it’s a 3-bedroom semi-detached in Woodbridge where the third bedroom got the smallest closet, or a primary bedroom in an older bungalow with a single-rod reach-in from 1975, small closet space is almost always about poor configuration — not lack of space. Here’s how to design a layout that actually works.
The Core Problem with Small Closets
Most small closets fail because they’re configured as single-rod, single-shelf units. That wastes 50–60% of the available vertical space and none of the floor area. A 4’×24” reach-in closet with a proper custom system holds 2–3× more than the same space with a standard single rod and shelf above.
What “Small” Actually Means in Practice
| Closet Opening | What Fits | What Won’t Fit |
|---|---|---|
| 24–48″ wide | Shallow shelves, hooks, folded items | Standard hanging; walk-in depth |
| 48–72″ wide | 1 hanging section + shelves + 2–4 drawers | Island; two full hanging runs |
| 72″–96″ wide (6–8’) | Double hang + shelves + drawers; small walk-in possible | Full walk-in with island |
Configuration Options by Opening Width
Under 48″ Wide (Under 4 Feet)
At under 48″, you can’t hang standard adult clothing on a rod — the rod would be too short for a full wardrobe. Options:
- Double-stack shelves with bins: Full-height shelving on both walls (if it’s a corner unit or alcove) with bins or baskets for folded items
- Hooks and rail system: A horizontal rail at 60–72″ with hooks for coats, bags, and jackets — not a true wardrobe but maximizes the space for what it is
- Custom pull-out drawer tower: A floor-to-ceiling drawer tower fits in 18–24″ wide, gives 8–12 drawers of folded-item storage
48–72″ Wide (4–6 Feet) — The Most Common Small Bedroom Closet
This is the standard secondary bedroom closet in GTA North homes. The best layout:
- One side (12–18″ wide): Drawer tower — 4–6 drawers for folded items, underwear, accessories. Puts the highest-use items at fingertip level.
- Centre and other side: Double short hang — Two rods stacked vertically for shirts, jackets, and folded trousers. Doubles the hanging capacity of a single rod in the same space.
- Above drawers: Open shelves — For folded items or shoe storage (3–4 pairs per shelf at 14″ depth).
- Top shelf full width: For bags, boxes, and seasonal items above the hang sections.
This layout converts a 48–72″ reach-in from a single-rod, one-shelf unit into a system with: 4–6 drawers, 16–24 double-hang spots, 3–5 shelves, and a full-width top shelf.
72–96″ Wide (6–8 Feet) — Converting to a Small Walk-In
At 6–8 feet wide, a reach-in closet can often be converted to a shallow walk-in — if the bedroom has the depth. A 6’×4’ walk-in with cabinets on three walls is far more functional than a 6’-wide reach-in, even though it occupies the same footprint. At 24–28″ deep (the minimum for walking in), you can have cabinets on both side walls and the back wall, with a clear walking aisle of 18–20″.
Maximizing Vertical Space: The Most Overlooked Dimension
- Floor-to-ceiling height use: Every small closet should use the full height. Upper shelves above 72″ hold seasonal items, luggage, and bulky boxes that don’t need daily access.
- Double-hang sections: Shirts and jackets need only 40–46″ of clearance. Double stacking two rods uses the same wall space as one single-rod section but stores twice as many garments.
- Drawer height optimization: Standard drawers at 6″ height store folded clothing well. Shallow drawers at 3–4″ are perfect for accessories, belts, and jewellery. Mix heights in a drawer tower for maximum versatility.
